Relative Wage Variation and Industry Location in the United Kingdom∗

چکیده
This paper shows that both relative wages and industry structure vary considerably across regions of the United Kingdom. In accordance with the neoclassical model of trade, skill-abundant regions exhibit lower skill premia than skill-scarce regions and tend to specialise in a more skillintensive mix of manufacturing sectors. We show that this specialisation leads U.K. regions to be asymmetrically exposed to external macroeconomic or international trade shocks.

UK wage inequality: An industry and regional perspective
This paper looks at male wage inequality in the United Kingdom across industries and regions over a fifteen year period. After controlling for the heterogeneity of productivity characteristics across the population, that part of wage inequality which cannot be explained by observable worker characteristics is examined. This is undertaken at both the industry and regional level to assess the key...
متن کاملPublic Spending on Health Service and Policy Research in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States: A Modest Proposal
Health services and policy research (HSPR) represent a multidisciplinary field which integrates knowledge from health economics, health policy, health technology assessment, epidemiology, political science among other fields, to evaluate decisions in health service delivery. Health service decisions are informed by evidence at the clinical, organizational, and policy level, levels with distinct...
متن کاملIRRA Proceedings 2004/The Future of Unions in Modern Britain/Union Relative Wage Effects in the United States and the United Kingdom
This paper presents evidence of both countercyclical and secular decline in the union membership wage premium in the United States and the United Kingdom over the last couple of decades. The premium has fallen for most groups of workers, the main exception being public sector workers in the United States. By the beginning of the 21st century, the premium remained substantial in the United State...
متن کاملEffect of Nonlinear Phase Variation in Optical Millimetre Wave Radio over Fibre Systems
In this paper, we propose an optical millimetre wave radio-over-fibre (mm-wave RoF) system that uses a dual drive Mach Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM), which is biased at the maximum transmission biasing point, to generate an optical double sideband-suppressed carrier. The input to the DD-MZM are binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-phase shift keying (8-PSK) and...
متن کاملMaking Research Matter; Comment on “Public Spending on Health Service and Policy Research in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States: A Modest Proposal”
We offer a UK-based commentary on the recent “Perspective” published in IJHPM by Thakkar and Sullivan. We are sympathetic to the authors’ call for increased funding for health service and policy research (HSPR). However, we point out that increasing that investment – in any of the three countries they compare: Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom– will ipso facto not necessarily lea...
